Well, That Was Fast – The Wave that Google Couldn’t Catch

Google Wave is dead

It’s official. Google Wave is dead.

I was kind of surprised that Google would give up on a new project so soon, but it’s happened.

Launched in early 2009, Google Wave definitely took some getting used to. I guess you could describe it as sort of like instant messaging, Twitter, and email all rolled into one. I tried it, but never really saw any value in it, and in the end it was just one more thing to keep up with.

Here’s part of the announcement, posted today on the Official Google Blog.

“Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects…”

I do feel that Google was wise to cut their losses early in the game. If it’s not working, then it’s wise to “fail early and fail fast”. The announcement went on to say:

“…Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. We are excited about what they will develop next as we continue to create innovations with the potential to advance technology and the wider web.”

So what do you think? Will you miss it? And even more importantly, will Buzz be next?
